What is a domain hack?

A domain hack reads across the dot: cr.yp.to is crypto. Here is how the trick works, which well-known names use it, and how to build one for your own name.

Quick answer

What is a domain hack?

A domain hack is a web address where the dot and the country-code ending complete the word, like cr.yp.to for crypto or ta.co for taco. At Pearlcay you can register one on 15 endings, among them .sh, .io, .ai, .me and .co. A .sh costs $50.49/year and a .me $18.99/year, with no KYC, paid in crypto.

How does a domain hack work?

A domain name has levels separated by dots. A hack reads the last levels as one word. youtu.be reads youtube. cr.yp.to reads crypto.

Wikipedia defines a domain hack as a name that suggests a word, phrase or name by joining two or more adjacent levels of the domain. The word 'hack' means a trick of reading, not an intrusion.

Almost every hack ends in a country code. IANA delegates the two-letter endings from the ISO 3166 list of countries and territories (RFC 1591). Each pair belongs to a place, and that place's registry sets the rules.

Eight real addresses built on a country-code ending

The first six read as a word or a brand across the dot. The last two are looser: .sh means shell to developers, and .so is just short. Sources are listed below.

AddressHow it readsEnding (place)What it is
youtu.beyoutu + be = YouTube.be (Belgium)YouTube's short links, launched on 21 December 2009
bit.lybit + ly = Bitly.ly (Libya)The Bitly link shortener, launched in 2009
cr.yp.tocr + yp + to = crypto.to (Tonga)D. J. Bernstein's cryptography site
ta.cota + co = taco.co (Colombia)Taco Bell's short address (2015), bought from the .co registry
del.icio.usdel + icio + us = delicious.us (United States)First address of the Delicious bookmarking site (2003)
goo.glgoo + gl = Google.gl (Greenland)Google's URL shortener
bun.shBun + sh (shell).sh (Saint Helena)The Bun JavaScript runtime's first address; it now points to bun.com
notion.soNotion + a short ending.so (Somalia)Notion's app-link address until early June 2026

Do famous hacks stay on their hack?

Not always. Delicious dropped del.icio.us for delicious.com after its 2008 redesign. Google said in July 2024 that goo.gl links would stop responding after 25 August 2025, then narrowed that to links with no activity. Notion's developer changelog says the links Notion generates moved from notion.so to app.notion.com in early June 2026, and that existing notion.so links still open.

The pattern is clear. A hack is a short, memorable address, and many brands keep the plain name beside it. If the brand matters to you, register both.

How do I find a domain hack for my own name?

Five steps, ten minutes. The example name is bonsai.

  1. List the words you could use

Write down your brand, your product and close words. Short words with a clear sound work best.

  2. Split off the last letters

Cut the word two letters from the end. radio becomes rad.io. fish becomes fi.sh. bonsai becomes bons.ai.

  3. Match the letters to an ending

Only real country codes work. The table below shows which letters each of our 15 endings can finish.

  4. Read it aloud, then type it

Say the name to someone and ask them to write it. If they type the plain word plus .com, the hack costs you visitors.

  5. Check the rules and the renewal price

Read the registry rules, then the renewal price. A low first year can hide a higher renewal. Our price table prints both.

Which of our endings can finish a word?

Each example is a pattern, not a registered name. Availability is checked when you search. Every ending has its own page: .ai, .io, .gg, .co, .me, .tv and the rest on the extensions page.

Prices per year, first year, on 2 November 2026. Renewals are on the pricing page. A .ai is billed for at least 2 years.

Do country rules apply to a domain hack?

Yes. The ending belongs to a country or territory, and its registry sets the rules. In 2010, Libya's registry removed vb.ly, a link shortener, citing Libyan law, according to The Register. The same year, .ly names under four characters were closed to people outside Libya.

Read the rules of an ending on its extension page before you register. A .ai is sold for at least 2 years and a .gg for one year at a time. Registration time: usually within minutes of the top-up being credited; a few island registries (.gg among them) can take up to a day to confirm a new name.

Does a domain hack cost more to keep?

It can. Check the renewal before you pay the first year. A .io is $35.99/year the first year and $62.99/year after. A .ai is $86.99/year at every renewal, billed for at least 2 years. The price table prints both figures for every ending.

Short names can also be registry premiums, priced by the registry. Taco Bell bought ta.co directly from the .co registry (Domain Name Wire, 2015). Read why some names cost more before you fall for a name.

Can the ending change its policy?

Yes. A country-code registry can change hands or change its rules. The .ai registry moved to Identity Digital in January 2025. Its chief strategy officer said that since then, transfers include a 2-year extension (Domain Name Wire, 23 January 2025).

The future of .io depends on the UK and Mauritius agreement on the Chagos Islands. What is decided and what is not, with dates, is in the guide on retired country codes.

Does a country-code ending change how Google sees my site?

For some endings, no. Pearlcay checked Google's list on 2 November 2026: 9 of the 15 endings it sells (.ai, .cc, .co, .fm, .io, .la, .me, .tv and .ws) are among the country-code endings Google treats as generic, so they carry no country signal. .gg, .sh, .so, .vc, .ac and .pw are not on the list, so Google's general rule applies: a country-code ending points to a country. Google says the list may change.

If your audience is worldwide, add explicit signals such as hreflang, as Google advises.

How do I register a domain hack at Pearlcay?

Type the whole name with its ending in the search box. Most registries answer live. A few, such as .io and .gg, show 'confirmed at order': the registry is asked when you order. A failed registration does not cost you: if a domain cannot be registered (taken in the meantime, refused by the registry), the full amount goes back to your balance.

You pay in crypto from a prepaid balance: BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, from $25. There is no KYC: one email address per domain, verified as ICANN rules require. A .cc is sold with Domain protection: the domain is registered in the name of DomaineGoat LLC, and you stay the beneficiary.

Type the whole name with its ending, for example rad.io or fi.sh.

Domain hack questions

Is a domain hack a normal domain name?

Yes. It is an ordinary registration on a country-code ending. Only the way you read it is a trick.

Which ending is best for a domain hack?

The one whose letters finish your word. Check the table above, then compare renewals: a .me renews at $18.99/year, a .sh at $50.49/year, a .io at $62.99/year.

Do domain hacks rank worse on Google?

Not for the endings Google treats as generic (.ai, .cc, .co, .fm, .io, .la, .me, .tv, .ws): they carry no country signal.

Can I buy a domain hack without showing an ID?

At Pearlcay, yes. You give one email address per domain, verified as ICANN rules require. No ID document, no selfie. Domains are registered through our ICANN-accredited registrar partner.

What happens if the country changes the rules?

It depends on the registry. The guide on retired country codes lists real cases: .yu, .tp and .an each had years of notice.
