Quick answer
Why do some .ai, .io or .gg names cost more?
Some .ai, .io or .gg names cost more because they are premium: either the registry flags the name and sets its price, or the name is already registered and its owner resells it. At Pearlcay, a standard .ai costs $86.99/year (2 November 2026), and the checkout shows the price before you pay, in crypto with no KYC.

| Renewal | A registry premium can renew at a premium price; a resale name usually renews at the standard rate |
| Standard prices at Pearlcay | .ai $86.99/year, .io $35.99/year, .gg $57.99/year |

What is a registry premium name?
A registry premium name is a name that the registry itself has flagged as valuable. Nobody has registered it yet, but it is sold at the registry's higher price. NameSilo explains that the registry, not an individual owner, sets these prices based on perceived market value (blog post of 21 January 2026).
Registrars show it with a label. Porkbun writes "premium registration" under the price, and its help article of 15 April 2026 says registration, transfer and renewal cost more for these names.
Do .ai, .io and .gg have such names? Registrars do not agree, and we found no public price list from these three registries. The table shows what two registrars say on their own pages.
What registrars say about premium names
| Extension | Dynadot | Netim |
|---|---|---|
| .ai | Supports premium domains, which have different pricing | Lists no premium service for this extension |
| .io | Supports premium domains, which have different pricing | Lists premium names at a special price |
| .gg | Supports premium domains, which have different pricing | Not checked |

A very high price on a .ai name therefore does not tell you by itself which kind of name it is. Check how the registrar labels it.
What is aftermarket resale?
An aftermarket name is already registered. Its owner has decided to sell it and sets the price. That price is often negotiable, and the name usually renews at the standard rate after you buy it. NameSilo, OpenSRS and DomainDetails all draw this line.
A resale deal is between you and the seller. Registrars flag these names with wording such as "make an offer" or "buy now", which tells you that a current owner exists.
Check the renewal price before you buy either type. The two kinds of name can look alike in a search result and behave differently a year later.
Standard, registry premium and resale names compared
| Question | Standard name | Registry premium | Aftermarket resale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is the name registered? | No | No | Yes |
| Who sets the price? | The registry sets the wholesale price | The registry, name by name | The current owner |
| Can you negotiate? | No | No | Often yes |
| What does it renew at? | The standard renewal price | Can stay at a premium price | Usually the standard price once you own it |
| How does a registrar show it? | The price from the price list | A label such as "premium registration" | "Make an offer" or "buy now" |
| Does the Pearlcay pricing page apply? | Yes | No | No |
How can I spot a premium name?
Look for these five signs before you pay.
- The price. A standard .ai costs $86.99/year here. According to Pearlcay's price check of 2 November 2026, the first year of a standard name cost $79.98 to $99.99 for a .ai, $26.99 to $38.99 for a .io and $51.60 to $68.98 for a .gg at the registrars whose own pages showed a dollar price. A price many times higher means the name is not standard.
- The label. Porkbun writes "premium registration" under the price of a registry premium.
- The ownership. An unregistered name sold at a high price is a registry premium. A registered name offered with "make an offer" or "buy now" is a resale.
- The renewal price. Porkbun advises you to check the projected renewal price shown at checkout before you register.
- The term. Do not mistake the .ai 2-year minimum for a premium. It doubles the first payment of every .ai registration, as the section on the 2-year minimum below explains.
Why does the table price not apply to premium names?
The prices on the pricing page are the standard price of each extension. A premium name sits outside that list. The registry or the owner prices it one name at a time. Dynadot warns that registry premium prices are subject to change per the registry (help article updated on 5 August 2025).
Renewal is where premium names differ most. Porkbun says some premium names renew at a low standard price and others at a higher price every year. NameSilo says registry premiums renew at premium rates. Dynadot says that for premium names from Identity Digital, the renewal and transfer price depends on the registration price.
For new gTLDs, ICANN's registry agreement asks for uniform renewal prices, with an exception when the buyer agreed to a higher price at registration (Domain Name Wire, 24 June 2022). The .ai, .io and .gg endings are country codes, which operate under local oversight (ICANN, 14 November 2024). We cannot assume the same protection, so read the renewal price before you pay.
What does Pearlcay do when a name is premium?
The checkout shows the price before you pay. The prices in our table apply to standard names only, so a premium name can show a different amount.
If a name cannot be registered at the price shown, the order is not charged. Our rule for a failed order: if a domain cannot be registered (taken in the meantime, refused by the registry), the full amount goes back to your balance.
You pay from a prepaid balance in crypto (BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC), with no KYC. The how it works page lists each step.
Is the .ai 2-year minimum a premium?
No. The 2-year minimum applies to every .ai registration, and it doubles the first payment: $173.98 for 2 years at Pearlcay. It is a registry term, not a price tier.
Read why .ai takes 2 years for the rule, and what a .ai costs over 10 years for the total.
Premium names: questions
What is a registry premium domain?
It is a name that the registry prices above its standard rate before anyone registers it. The registry sets the price, not the registrar or an owner (NameSilo). Porkbun shows these names with the label "premium registration" and says they cost more to register, transfer and renew.
Is every expensive .ai or .io name a registry premium?
No. A high price can also be a resale price set by the owner of a registered name. An unregistered name at a high price is a registry premium. A registered name offered with "make an offer" or "buy now" is a resale.
Will a premium name renew at the premium price?
It depends. Porkbun says some renew at a low standard price and others at a higher price every year. NameSilo says registry premiums renew at premium rates. Check the renewal price at checkout before you pay.
Can I negotiate the price of a premium name?
For a resale name, often yes, because the owner sets the price. For a registry premium, no: the registry fixes it (DomainDetails). A resale deal is between you and the seller.
Does Pearlcay show the price of a premium name before I pay?
Yes. The checkout shows the price before you pay. If a name cannot be registered at the price shown, the order is not charged: if a domain cannot be registered (taken in the meantime, refused by the registry), the full amount goes back to your balance.
Does the .ai 2-year rule make a name premium?
No. The registry requires at least 2 years for every .ai registration and renewal, so the first payment is $173.98 at Pearlcay. That is a term, not a premium price.
