Quick answer

Why are .ai domains so expensive?

A .ai domain is expensive because its registry, the Government of Anguilla, charges registrars $80 a year since 5 March 2026, about seven times the roughly $11 a .com costs at wholesale, and sells it only in 2-year blocks. At Pearlcay a .ai costs $86.99/year, so the first order is $173.98, paid in crypto with no KYC.

What is in the price of a .ai domain?

A .ai price has three layers.

  • The registry's wholesale fee: $80 a year since 5 March 2026, or $160 for the 2-year minimum.
  • The operator's share: Identity Digital runs .ai for the Government of Anguilla.
  • The registrar's own price: whatever it adds on top.

Domain Name Wire reported on 28 January 2026 that Identity Digital takes a 10% revenue share and that the rest goes to the government. Applied to $80, that is about $8 for the operator and about $72 for Anguilla. We could not find the contract, so read those two figures as our arithmetic on the reported share, not as a published split.

The registrar's price comes last. The next section shows how much it adds.

How much do registrars add to the $80 wholesale price?

Between nothing and about $20 a year on the first year. According to Pearlcay's price check of 2 November 2026, 6 of the 7 registrars with a clear price in dollars add less than $10 a year. Cloudflare sells at cost, at $80.00. Spaceship lists $79.98, two cents under the wholesale fee, and we did not test its checkout. At the other end, NameSilo asks $99.99, which is $19.99 or 25% above the wholesale fee.

Prices read on each registrar's page on 2 November 2026, in US dollars. Euro prices are converted at 1.115981 dollars per euro. Epik is left out because we found its prices only on a third-party aggregator.

The renewal column matters as much as the first year. A .ai is renewed in 2-year blocks, so a renewal that sits $34.98 above wholesale, as at Namecheap, costs $69.96 more per block. The 10-year cost report adds up every registrar.

Why is the registry's wholesale price so high?

Neither the Government of Anguilla nor Identity Digital has published a cost-based reason for $80 that we could find, and we do not guess one. The sources do show the size of the gap and who sets the price.

A .com costs registrars about $11 a year at wholesale. Verisign's agreement with ICANN lets it raise that fee by up to 7% in four of every six years (Openprovider, 9 September 2026). A .ai is a country code. Its registry is the Government of Anguilla, and Identity Digital operates it under a five-year agreement signed in October 2024. Domain Name Wire reported that Anguilla keeps the majority of the revenue and that Identity Digital provides a minimum income guarantee.

The ratio is $80 to about $11, roughly seven to one. A .ai is also sold only in 2-year blocks, so the first number a buyer sees at checkout is $160 or more. Why .ai takes 2 years covers that rule.

How did demand from AI companies raise the price?

Demand came first and the rise followed. ChatGPT launched on 30 November 2022. Vince Cate, who handled .ai sales for the Anguilla government at the time, told IEEE Spectrum that sales rose almost fourfold in the following five months, then levelled off at a much higher rate.

The wholesale rise came after the milestone. The register passed 1 million names on 20 January 2026. Domain Name Wire reported the rise on 2 February, and it took effect on 5 March 2026: $70 to $80 a year, or $140 to $160 for two years. The rise is 14%, and it took effect 44 days after the milestone.

The sources give the facts in this order. They do not say that one caused the other. Resale prices of single names are a separate market and are not part of the registry fee.

Where does the money from a .ai go?

Mostly to the Government of Anguilla, after the operator's reported 10% share. These are the sourced figures.

Anguilla's .ai revenue in Eastern Caribbean dollars (EC$) and US dollars, as reported.
Period.ai revenue to the governmentSource
2023EC$87 million (about US$32 million), just over 20% of government revenueIMF, 15 May 2024

January to July 2026EC$217 million (US$80 million), above the EC$203 million of tax revenue from the whole productive sectorJamaica Gleaner, 9 October 2026

The periods differ and the sources count collections in their own way, so the rows are not additive.

A government minister told the BBC in September 2025 that .ai was expected to supply nearly half of public revenue that year (Anguilla Focus). The government says the money has paid for airport and road work, tax relief for residents and health services, according to Domain Name Wire. Domain Name Wire notes that Anguilla has about 15,000 residents.

What does a buyer actually pay over 2 and 10 years?

The registry fee is the floor: $160 for the first 2-year block and $800 for 10 years, before any registrar. On 2 November 2026, the registrars with a clear .ai price charge $159.96 to $199.98 for the first 2 years, and $799.80 to $999.90 for 10 years at a steady yearly price. Namecheap's higher renewals lift its 10-year total to about $1,125. Gandi's renewal line is unclear, so we leave its total out.

At Pearlcay the first order is $173.98 because the registry requires two years at once, and the price stays $86.99/year at every renewal. You pay in crypto, with no ID document.

How can I pay less for a .ai domain?

You cannot change the registry fee. You can avoid paying more than it takes.

  • Compare 10-year totals, not the first year. Over 10 years, only the first 2-year block is a first-order price. The other four blocks are renewals, so renewals carry 80% of the bill.
  • Do not chase promo prices. A coupon lowers the first order only. Coupon codes listed on third-party sites are often limited per customer, and we do not count them in any table.
  • Read the renewal line before you pay. A .ai renewal at $114.98, against a first year at $89.98, is the pattern to avoid.
  • Skip registry premiums unless you need that exact name. The registry prices some names above the standard fee: why some .ai names cost more.
  • Ask whether a one-year extension will do. For a test name or a side project, a .co costs $33.99/year, a .me $18.99/year and a .sh $50.49/year, one year at a time. See all extensions.
  • Pay renewals only from your account. A message that asks for a renewal payment somewhere else is not a renewal. We never ask for your password, your account number or your domain transfer (EPP) codes by email or chat.

Why .ai costs so much: questions

Why are .ai domains more expensive than .com?

The registry's wholesale fee is $80 a year, against about $11 for a .com, and a .ai is sold in 2-year blocks, so checkout shows $160 or more. At Pearlcay the first order is $173.98, paid in crypto with no KYC.

Will the price of a .ai come down?

We found no announcement of a cut. The only change announced for 2026 is the rise from $70 to $80 a year on 5 March 2026. The dated price history lists every notice we could source.

Is a .ai cheaper if I buy several years at once?

Not at Pearlcay: the price is $86.99/year every year, in 2-year steps up to 10 years. A term you have already paid keeps the price you paid for it, so a longer term protects you from a later rise.

Who gets the money I pay for a .ai?

You pay your registrar. It pays the registry, and the Government of Anguilla receives most of that fee after Identity Digital's reported 10% share. In 2025 the government collected EC$230.5 million, or US$85.3 million.

Do premium .ai names cost more than $80 a year?

Yes. The registry fixes a higher price for some names, mostly short and dictionary words. Why some .ai names cost more explains how it works and how to check a price.
