What is a .la domain: Laos or Los Angeles?

The .la ending is officially the country code of Laos, a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Its registry markets it abroad, with the Los Angeles reading as the draw, and anyone can register a name.

Quick answer

Is a .la domain for Laos or for Los Angeles?

.la is the country code of Laos, not of Los Angeles, but its registry sells it worldwide and anyone can register one. The letters suit the city, which is why it is used far beyond Laos. At Pearlcay, a .la costs $31.49/year the first year and $31.49/year to renew (2 November 2026), paid in crypto with no KYC.

Laos, the country behind .la (not an island)

Unlike most extensions on Pearlcay, .la does not come from an island. Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, and Vientiane is its capital. Its code is a real country code, delegated by IANA like any other. IANA lists the Lao National Internet Center (LANIC), under the Ministry of Technology and Communications, as the sponsor and as the administrative and technical contact. The record points to www.la as the registration site, lists name servers under nic.la next to others, and was last updated on 20 October 2026.

The Los Angeles part is commercial. In April 2011 Domain Incite reported that Laos had recruited Vietnamese experts to help LANIC bring the registry back to the country. CentralNic, the UK company that manages .la, answered that its subsidiary LA Registry works under a LANIC mandate to develop .LA outside Laos and would continue to do so. The same report described .la as operating in practice as a city top-level domain for Los Angeles.

The survey of 2 November 2026 still names LA Registry, with CentralNic as the back end. Public sources do not say how much of the registry moved to Laos after 2011, so we do not claim to know who holds the day-to-day registry.

Who uses a .la domain?

The Los Angeles reading is the main reason people buy .la: two letters, the abbreviation of a famous city, and an address that is easy to say. The pitch works because the registry sells the ending worldwide, which is what the LANIC mandate was for.

Real sites show the range. Mozilla uses mzl.la for its short links, according to Mozilla's support site. The Digital Public Library of America is at dp.la. Both read as abbreviations: mzl.la is Mozilla without its vowels, and dp.la reads as the library's initials.

The ending also suits words that end in "la", such as gondola or vanilla, which split into gondo.la and vanil.la. These are patterns, not registered names.

Laos itself is a minor user. A .la name does not make you a Los Angeles business, and nothing here suggests an official link to the city, so treat it as a brand choice. See domain hacks for how to build one.

What are the .la rules?

Who can register. Anyone, first come, first served. Term. One to ten years, according to GoDaddy's .la help page.

Email check. The registry requires the contact email to be verified before a new .la is active. GoDaddy warns that unverified domains are suspended and then deleted by the registry. The survey adds that invalid contact data can be a ground for cancellation. Answer the verification email as soon as it arrives.

Premium names. Some names are reserved as registry premiums and cost more.

Content rules. The sources conflict: one mentions a forbidden-names list, Asia Register says there is none, and the registry terms were not retrieved. We treat this as unclear.

Whois. Our dataset lists WHOIS privacy as unknown for .la, and Pearlcay does not promise free privacy on it.

Transfers. Gandi says a transfer is free and does not extend the expiry; Dynadot charges more than twice its registration price. At Pearlcay a transfer is priced like one renewal.

Disputes. Pearlcay handles trademark disputes through the UDRP.
